Open plan layouts have their pros and cons. On one hand, they create a spacious and open feel, but on the other hand, it can be a bit tricky to define different areas within the same space. Recently, we had the pleasure of working with a client who owned a cozy open plan townhouse. She wanted to transform her home into an unabashedly Indian haven that reminded her of own away from home.

Our mission was clear: optimize the existing furniture, infuse a bold Indian accent wall, and make the most of the available space. Together with our client, we brainstormed ideas and discovered that she wanted the accent wall to be both budget-friendly and easily replaceable in the future.

Accent wall

We created a stunning feature wall using self-adhesive 3D hexagonal MDF panels. These panels were not only cost effective but also allowed for easy replacements and could be repurposed whenever our client wanted to change things up. To add the Indian touch, we incorporated beautifully custom painted Kalamkari and Pichwai paintings onto the wall, infusing the space with a unique charm.

Living space

In the living area, we reused our client’s existing white sectional sofa. To inject a splash of color and accent, we introduced a vibrant blue armchair with gold-accented legs. Additionally, we added two ottomans with a golden rim, providing extra seating for those exciting party nights. And to tie it all together, we carefully placed a round coffee table, ensuring a smooth flow throughout the room.

Next, we tackled the challenge of demarcating separate spaces. We knew we needed a solution that created a sense of division while maintaining an open flow. Enter the stylish bookshelf! This functional separator not only added separation but also became a delightful showcase for our client’s cherished collection of Kondapalli toys from her travels. The vivid colors of these playful treasures brought brightness and joy to the entire space.

When it came to the TV wall, we chose simplicity to let the magnificent accent wall take center stage. To enhance the overall aesthetic, we added stylish lamps to the shelving on either side of the TV, creating a visually appealing arrangement that exuded charm and sophistication.

We are thrilled we could transform the space in true DesiDIY style, fulfill the client’s brief and create a true oasis where she could relax and be reminded of all things she holds dear.
