My Interior design projects most often involve just interior decorating or creating some feature walls. This project was one such interesting project where my client wanted to redo their fireplace wall and bring in a dramatic change. So this was the space that I had to transform.
I really loved the niches on each side of the fireplace where we can add some shelving and adorn it with lovely decor. Since her home was mostly midcentury style, I wanted to keep this space modern enough and yet have a little Indian touch to it. We decided we will go with shelving on both sides and for giving in the modern vibe we thought we will do the floating cabinets and then floating shelves.
My client really loved the shiplap walls and she wanted to have the shiplap on the fireplace wall. I had suggested doing white shiplap on the fireplace and doing darker color on the side niches so that it gives a nice contrast and color pop
This was the inspiration from http://pinterest.com that I had picked to envision the color combination to her.
They got the shelving done first with the handyman and then decide on the colors. I really loved the birch wood floating shelves, once stained they would look lovely I felt. Next they had to get the shiplap done and paint the niches.
A lot of people are very skeptical on dark colors, but they add a lot of character when combined with natural elements like wood and plants. I had a hard time convincing my client to go with black cabinets and black wall on the sides, but she finally said yes.
can you see that beautiful combination of wood with black cabinets. The moment I saw, I fell in love and asked them go ahead with painting the whole wall without a second thought.
The next thing we had in mind was the window trims, whether we should paint it black or leave it white. I wanted to paint it all black because it would look really odd when there is such lovely color pop flowing through and you have white window between. so we got the window trim painted in black too.
Since the window trims are already finished, we had to go for a couple of coats to match the color. And this is how it looked with painted window trims.

How many of you already love the look of the wall?? This looks absolutely amazing. The next thing was to decide the stain for the birch wood floating shelves. We really loved the natural wood color, so we thought we will just stain the lower shelf and leave the upper shelf in natural color. We got the lower shelf stained in black and top shelf in Golden Oak.
We had everything done and we really loved the look of the entire space. Now comes my turn to spruce it up which is the best part of my projects. I wanted to add some natural elements in my decor and most importantly have to give a subtle desi touch. I top things I had on my list were few antique frames, dirt vase (found on sale in pier one Imports), raw wood branch (found from amazon) and some planters and accents were randomly picked from home goods.
Have linked all the amazon products in the below link.
And this is how it turned after my styling :). Tell me how you like it in the comments.
There is another surprise corner we styled along with the fireplace shelving. The console table was from target and the prabhavali frame was custom made by the designer (myself). The terrarium is from worldmarket and the small glass dome stand is from Ikea that we have added an antique diya in it.
