Jharokha Jugaad

Want to add a royal touch to your home? This project came from a fun design challenge—a client who wanted the beauty of wallpaper but not directly on the walls. Sounds tricky, right? But that’s the kind of puzzle we love to solve.

The solution was jharokha-style panels. They bring in all the drama of wallpaper while acting like statement art with an architectural twist. The best part? These panels are movable, customizable, and completely unique, giving you the freedom to change up your look whenever you like.

Sketching and Shaping

Every good DIY starts with a sketch—and let me tell you, I’m a little obsessive when it comes to those lines. I pulled out my pencil, and ruler, determined to get those jharokha curves just right. I worked on one side first, measuring and tweaking until it felt perfect. And instead of repeating the whole process on the other side, I got smart about it. I used the first half as a template, flipped it, and traced the exact shape to mirror it. It saved time, kept everything symmetrical, and gave me a little “aha” moment of efficiency (not laziness, promise!).

Once the pattern was ready, I transferred it onto the wood and started cutting. That’s when the magic began—those beautiful jharokha arches slowly coming to life in front of me.

The Wallpaper Party

Here’s where it got fun—and maybe a little messy. Armed with a bucket of wallpaper glue, my favorite print, and a lot of patience, I started fitting the paper into the carved panels. It was like piecing together a puzzle, making sure the design lined up just right inside each curve and edge.

There were moments of laughter, a few “oops” corrections, and yes, even some friendly disagreements about which way the pattern should flow. But with every smoothed-out wrinkle and perfectly matched seam, the panels started looking more and more like the vision I had in my head. Honestly, this part felt less like work and more like play.

The Golden Glow

Now, let’s be honest—no jharokha is complete without a touch of royal shimmer. That’s where the bendy gold trim came in. I still remember peeling the backing and carefully pressing it into place along each curve. The way it instantly highlighted the shape felt like magic. Suddenly, the panel went from “nice DIY” to “wow, that looks expensive.” It’s funny how a little gold detail can transform a piece, but in this case, it really pulled the whole project together.

The Grand Reveal

After all the cutting, gluing, and golden touches, it was finally time to step back. And oh, what a moment. The panels looked regal, like they belonged in a haveli or palace, but here they were—crafted with love, right at home. The best part is how versatile they are. You can lean them against a wall, hang them up as art, or use them as a backdrop for festive decor. And when you’re ready for a new look? Just swap out the wallpaper for another design and give your jharokhas a whole new personality.

It’s one of those projects that keeps on giving, and seeing the final reveal made all the effort (and the glue-covered fingers) completely worth it.
