Project Andal Unjal began with a simple yet soulful intention—to create a sacred corner that doesn’t feel static, but alive. In many South Indian homes, an unjal is a symbol of devotion in motion—a place where prayer, celebration, and stillness gently sway together. We wanted to bring that feeling into our home, blending faith with warmth and lived-in beauty.
The Andal Arch – A Sacred Anchor
At the heart of the space, we designed an arched backdrop that naturally anchors the room. More than a decorative frame, the arch symbolises sanctity and transition—gently marking the shift from the everyday to the sacred. Concealed LED lighting traces its curve, casting a soft, halo-like glow that draws the eye inward without overpowering the space.
The artwork of Andal from Old World Tales becomes the soul of the wall. Captured mid-movement, her posture feels light and expressive, her gaze lifted in quiet devotion. It feels as though devotion here is alive—not static, but gently unfolding.
Flanking the arch, subtle botanical and bird motifs bring movement and storytelling into the space. Birds in flight echo Andal’s poetry—free, expressive, and devotional in spirit—while the leafy accents add a natural rhythm. They remind us that faith often finds its deepest expression when it is intertwined with nature.
These elements were intentionally kept understated, allowing the wall to feel layered yet serene—rich in meaning, calm in presence.
The DIY Faux Wooden Unjal – Devotion in Motion
Near the window, we created a DIY faux wooden swing, suspended using brass brackets. Though designed as a stationary swing, it carries the visual and emotional essence of a traditional unjal. The warm wooden finish adds grounding to the space, while the brass detailing lends a festive, timeless charm.
Placed close to natural light, the unjal feels airy and serene—perfect for quiet prayer, reflection, or simply sitting in stillness. It doesn’t dominate the space; instead, it complements the arch wall, allowing devotion to feel gentle and intimate.
Brass Accents & Natural Balance
Beside the swing, we placed a brass planter, adding both weight and warmth to the corner. The soft gleam of brass against wood and muted walls brings a sense of tradition without heaviness. Together, the swing and planter create a balanced vignette—rooted, calm, and thoughtfully layered.
The Pooja Cabinet – Holding Rituals Steady
We paired the feature wall with a traditional wooden pooja cabinet, rich in tone and character. Its presence grounds the space, offering balance to the softness of the wall treatment. The cabinet stands quietly—neither dominating nor disappearing—holding rituals, lamps, and moments of prayer with dignity.
Together, the wall and the cabinet create a dialogue between heritage and contemporary design, where neither competes and both coexist.
Closing Note
Project Andal Unjal is our way of blending devotion with design—without making it loud or heavy. It’s a space shaped by tradition, softened by light, and inspired by Andal’s grace. Here, faith doesn’t feel staged. It feels like it belongs—like a gentle sway of devotion, right at home.
